   September 23rd - 25th, 2023

If you have made an "additional donation" to Ride To Walk when registering, it will go directly to them.\

There will be no camping on Friday night this year.

SEE STATEMENT HERE

Please note:

  • The minimum age for entry is 8 years old. Younger children may finish with you, but please don't let them wander on the course

Our goal is to provide a safe, friendly, beautiful location to run as long your heart desires, or for up to 48 hours- whichever comes first. This is a fixed-time loop format, meaning you can stop and rest, eat, nap, go watch a movie, whatever you want to do - but the clock never stops. We will offer a 48 hour race, two 24 hour options, three 12 hour options, and three 6-hour options, as well as the 100 mile race.

The event takes place at Sunset Whitney Recreation Area, in Rocklin CA.

Start Times:

48 hr- 9am on Saturday, 9/23/2023

100 Mile- 9am on Saturday, 9/23/2023

24 hr- 9am on Saturday, 9/23, and 9am on Sunday, 9/24

12 hr- 9am and 9pm on Saturday, 9/23, and 9am on Sunday, 9/24

6 hr- 9am and 9pm on Saturday, 9/23 and 9am on Sunday, 9/24

Start Times

The Course:

The course is a 1.1mile loop, pretty flat, and 90% dirt track.

Every six hours, we will turn you around so you can enjoy the scenery from the other direction, and workout the other ankle.

If dry, which it should be, light trail shoes or even your favorite road shoes will be perfectly fine - but in the off-chance it's wet, some aggressive trail shoes are definitely in order. It will be slick and muddy. The race will run, rain or shine, so come prepared for anything.

Aid:

There will be one aid station at the Start\Finish line, stocked with the usual Ultra snacks, but feel free to supplement with anything you think you might need. This is a cupless event, so please bring your own cup, which you may leave at the aid station if you wish. We will try to provide some "real" food items, like pizza, or quesadillas, in the evening, and pastries or pancakes in the morning- but don't count on a full-fledged buffet. We will be happy to fill bottles for you, just let us know what you want, and we will have it ready for you next loop. Please put your name on your bottles and cups.

Treats include:

Tailwind (No caffeine) and Water

Coke, Ginger Ale, Dr Pepper, Root Beer

Coffee

Potatoes and Salt

Watermelon, Bananas, other Fresh Fruit

Pickles

PB and J

Candy, Cookies, Chips, Pretzels

Hot Veggie and Chicken Broth

Cup 'O Noodles

100 Mile Race:

100 Mile runners will have the full 48 hours to finish- but choose carefully, as we will not move you into the 48hr if you drop. It's just not fair to the 48 hour competitors to have someone fall out of the sky and knock them down in the standings. DNF's will happen in the 100, so if you are in doubt, consider the 48hr event.

Timing:

Timing is provided by the World Famous Mike Melton of MCM Timing! He will provide redundant chip timing, dual timing mats, live online results and real-time results on a live runner results display. Mike is a pro, and his yearly resume includes Across The Years and A Race For The Ages, among countless others. His dance moves are pretty fantastic as well...

Only full laps will count, we will not be measuring partial loops. GPS results may vary - our lap count and calculated mileage will be the official results, even if your watch says you went farther.

Equipment Rentals: Let us do the work for you.

We have a limited number of tents, sleeping bags, tables, and chairs available to rent. First-come, first-served, and when they are gone, they are gone- so get in early if you want one. All rentals are good for the full 48 hours. We will set them up and tear them down. Just show up and run!
Small Tent- $29
> with one sleeping pad- $49
Large Tent- $79
> with two sleeping pads- $129
Sleeping bag- $33 each
Personal Folding Table- $30 each
Folding Chair- $12 each

Volunteer Credit:

Probably the most important part of the event: the volunteers. Volunteers who work six hours will receive a $40 credit toward any race this year or next. Limited spots are available. Click the "Volunteer" button on Ultrasignup! Thank you!

Spectators and Pacers:

Your friends and family are welcome and encouraged. They may even make the occasional lap or two with you if you wish.

Pacers will be allowed in the 100 mile event, and from sunset to sunrise in the 24 and 48 hour events.
Based on capacity of the loop, we will limit the total number of pacers to 30, on a first-registered, first-served basis.
You will be asked during registration if you will be bringing a pacer. We will monitor and shut off pacer requests after 30 spots have been filled across ALL races. Please only register a pacer if you are relatively sure you are bringing one, otherwise you may take a spot from someone else.
Register early. You will get the lowest entry fee, and be guaranteed a bib for your pacer.
Pacers may eat and drink from the aid station. You will be given one pacer bib. You may rotate pacers, but only one out at a time.
If you are not given a pacer, family and friends may accompany you for the occasional lap. Do not abuse this, please.

Guides for Visually Impaired Runners :

Sighted guides for visually impaired runners will run for free, and receive the same benefits as their runner, with the exception of awards, if the runner happens to place. Aid, food, drink, and swag are all included, on us. Just register the runner at Ultrasignup, and then email craig@thunderultras.com to let us know that a sighted guide will be accompanying the runner. The course, while trail, is relatively smooth and groomed.

Swag and Awards:

Each runner will receive a Thunder Ultras Trucker Hat, as well as some other small goodies. For the purpose of scoring and results, all 24, 12, and 6 hour runners will be consolidated into one race per distance. For example, all three 6 hour start times will roll up into one 6 hour event, with one male and one female winner. This adds flexibility to start times, without adding extra mayhem when trying to score the race. Runners completing 100 miles will receive a custom 100 mile buckle.

Weather\First Aid:

Odds are, it will be hot. September averages are a high of 91, and low of 56, with only one day of rain in the month. Drink plenty of fluids, take your salt caps, and bring a cooling towel. Please be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke and take appropriate action if needed. First aid personnel will be on hand. First, and foremost, however, you are responsible for keeping yourself safe and healthy, so please inform us immediately if something isn't right. We will get you help.

Lights:

We will have glow sticks on the course markers at night, but it will get dark. And not "city dark". Out on the trail, it will get DARK. Please make sure you have adequate personal lighting for the trail, and your "home base". It will keep you from bouncing down the trail on your face, and will help keep critters away from the area.

Address/Camping

Sunset Whitney Recreation Area

4201 Midas Ave

There will be no camping on Friday night this year, due to the high daily cost of renting the rec area. Camping will be allowed on Saturday and Sunday. Pop-Ups, tables, and chairs are welcome, so you can set up your own personal aid station along the course. You can come out Friday night and stake out your favorite spot, and check out the place, but remember that this is a public location. We will be on-site, but cannot be responsible for your belongings.

Packet Pickup:

Honestly, you can just show up early for your race and grab your stuff, but you can check in on Friday, 9/22/23, from 5-9, or Saturday beginning at 7am.  Pre-registration is highly encouraged, but race day registration will be accepted, via cash, credit card, or PayPal. Later races can just show up at least 45 minutes early to check-in. Please see pricing note below!

Prices:

Please note: there will be a $30 surcharge for any registrations after Wednesday, 9/20/23. While we can appreciate waiting until the last minute to make sure there aren't any unforeseen issues, last-minute registrations put a burden on us, as we are trying to set up the event and are constantly being pulled to process registrations. We would love to have you, and will take you up until five minutes before the race, just know that there will be a premium for doing so.
