Dipsea Stairs cleanup: The Dipsea Race would like to express its gratitude to San Francisco Running Company and its army of employees and volunteers, for sponsoring a series of Dipsea Stairs cleanup sessions.

The next one is planned for May 15 and there will be a special pre-race clean up on June 5th. All are welcome to join. 2024 Dipsea Foundation Hall of Fame Dinner : The Dipsea Foundation has announced that its annual Hall of Fame and Scholarship dinner will be held on Friday evening, June 7th at the Spinnaker restaurant in Sausalito. Come out for an evening of Dipsea stories and to meet several race legends!

Dipsea Legend Darryl Beardall passes away: The Dipsea Race is deeply saddened to report that in what has been a very difficult year, we have lost another legend and Hall of Fame member, Darryl Beardall.

Darryl ran his first Dipsea at the age of 18 in 1955 finishing 9th and ran nearly every Dipsea Race after that until the age of 79 in 2016. Darryl was inducted into the Dipsea Hall of Fame in 1995 and raced in a total of 59 Dipsea Races. Darryl earned 17 coveted black Dipsea shirts and won the Dipsea Race twice, in 1974 and 1978. Darryl also achieved fastest time honors in the 1961 and 1963 Dipsea Races.

Darryl was passionate about the Dipsea, but he was also active in the broader running community, logging nearly 300,000 training miles in his lifetime and consistently running upwards of 120 miles a week. Darryl ran over 200 marathons and participated in US Olympic Time Trials 4 times achieving two 8th and one 9th place finishes.

In college Darryl ran for two years with a full scholarship at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah and was an active member of both Tamalpa Runners and Empire Running Club. Darryl was involved in the Dipsea up until this year's race, where he assisted with high fives, awarding medals and his usual enthusiasm at the finish line.

Thank you for all the memories, Darryl and our thoughts are with your family. You will be greatly missed.

Jim Weil, longtime Dipsea Handicapper, passes away: The Dipsea Race is saddened to announce the passing of Jim Weil, father of the modern day Dipsea Race handicap system.

Jim didn’t create the idea of handicaps in the Dipsea Race but he did create the format used in today’s Dipsea Races. With engineering degrees from both MIT and UC Berkeley, Jim took on the complicated project of implementing Dipsea race handicaps, which quickly turned into a passion, after an especially chaotic 1977 race year when over 2,000 runners lined up at the start line. Jim’s goal then and continuing forward was to make the trail safer and open the race so that everyone, regardless of age or sex, had a fair opportunity to win.

In 1982 Weil created the start system in which handicap groups begin a single minute apart. In 1986 he implemented the winners penalty minute, whereby prior winners of the race for two years concurrent have an extra minute added to their start time. This was in part a response to the legendary Dipsea Runner, Sal Vasquez, winning four consecutive Dipsea races. In 2019 Weil was inducted into the Dipsea Hall of Fame for his tremendous contributions to the Dipsea.

Long-time Dipsea director Edda Stickle said, “Jim’s meticulous tracking, analysis and modeling skills have produced a start time system fair to all participants. Jim played an integral role in the Dipsea and his legacy will carry on for many years to come. He will be missed by all those who knew him."

Weil’s famous advice to all the runners who complained about the head start minutes was very simple: “Run Faster!”

Megan McGowan, Harry Cordellos to be honored at Dipsea Hall of Fame dinner: The Dipsea Hall of Fame induction dinner and scholarship ceremony on Friday, June 9, in Sausalito will be one for the ages.

Megan McGowan Sawyer, who won back-to-back Dipsea races before she was a teenager, and the late Harry Cordellos, who competed in more than a dozen Dipseas though blind up to the age of 70, will be the newest Dipsea HOF inductees. They will be honored at the Dipsea HOF dinner ceremony, which has moved to Spinnaker’s restaurant in Sausalito.

Dipsea Race statement on passing of blind running legend Harry Cordellos: The Dipsea Race Committee is saddened and heartbroken by the sudden passing of a great man and athletic marvel, Harry Cordellos. Though born blind with congenital glaucoma, Harry became an inspiration for all ages. He learned to play the clarinet, tenor saxophone and other musical instruments and earned a masters degree in physical education. He also learned to water ski, snow ski, and even hang glide and he competed as a runner in more than 150 marathons and more than a dozen Dipsea races. Most famously he was filmed in 1979 as the star of the award-winning documentary “Survival Run” where he said of the country’s oldest trail race `The Dipsea Race is like life. You don’t win it … You survive it.” That movie was watched and praised in the White House by then President Jimmy Carter. We were honored to have had Harry in our race and in our hearts. We notified Harry five weeks ago that we were going to induct him into the Dipsea Race Hall of Fame on June 9, news that brought a big grin to his face, a memory we will forever treasure. Our thoughts go out to the Cordellos family, his many friends, and all who have been touched and inspired by Harry’s life and the way he lived it.

“Russ was a Dipsea treasure. He was a champion for the race in the truest sense. His contributions to the Dipsea went far beyond his three individual championships, 30 Black Shirts, and Hall of Fame career. He was an ambassador for the competitiveness and camaraderie of the race and shared his knowledge of the course and its spirit to anyone who would ask. He was as gracious in victory as he was in all the years he determinedly chased it and fell short. He was a friend more than a foe, a gift from the Dipsea gods. He was and always will be a Dipsea hero.”

Letters Between Legends: There is a special relationship among champions of the Dipsea Race, but perhaps none more unique than the connection between the late Jack “The Dipsea Demon” Kirk and Russ Kiernan.

Let’s just call it “Letters Amid Legends.”

From 1989 to 2000, Kirk -- a two-time Dipsea winner who competed in 68 consecutive Dipseas the last at the age of 96 -- would mail hand-written letters from his secluded 400-acre property off Buckeye Road in Mariposa to Kiernan in Mill Valley where Kiernan saved and preserved them. Kirk played the role of mentor and Kiernan, a retired substitute teacher, was his pupil.

Minimum Age for Dipsea Runners: Following years of discussion, the Dipsea Race Committee is raising the minimum age for participants in The Annual Dipsea due to trail safety concerns. The minimum age requirement will be 6 years old effective June 11, 2023 at the 112th Dipsea Race and 7 years old beginning with the 113th Dipsea Race on June 9, 2024.

Mark Tatum wins the 110th Dipsea: 61-year-old Mark Tatum of Colorado Springs became the first non-Californian to win the Dipsea since Gail Scott of Durango, Colorado in 1986 and the first male outside the state of California to win the historic trail race since Joe Patterson of Queensland, Australia in 1975 on Sunday in the 110th Dipsea. He outran an impressive field that included the runner-up, 62-year-old Dan King of Boulder, Colo, who last month in Boston was the 60+ winner in the Masters National Cross Country Championships; four-time and defending race champion Brian Pilcher, 65, of Kentfield, who last weekend set seven American Records in the same race – the River Oaks Invitational Marathon in Houston, Tx; and scratch runner 28-year-old Eddie Owens of Larkspur, who posted the fastest time (47:48) in the 7.4 mile race from downtown Mill Valley to Stinson Beach. Two-time Dipsea champion Chris Lundy of Mill Valley posted the fastest time (1:01.25) and highest finish (eighth) by a female.

Virtual Dipsea Run Virtual Honors Ceremony October 17: Now that the Virtual Dipsea Run has ended, the Virtual Dipsea Run Virtual Honors Ceremony will be this Saturday, October 17, starting at noon Pacific time via Zoom.

If you entered the Virtual Dipsea and posted a time, you will receive an email inviting you to join the ceremony.

Thank you to all 630 plus participants from 27 states and five countries who entered the free event.

The 110th Dipsea is scheduled for Sunday, June 13, 2021.

The Virtual Dipsea Run Extended to Oct. 11: Because of lingering poor and unhealthy air quality in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Western United States, the Dipsea Race Committee has decided again to extend the Virtual Dipsea Run, this time to Sunday, October 11.

Participants should sign up for the free virtual run -- which originally started on July 6 -- and log their times before Oct. 11 in advance of the Virtual Dipsea Run Virtual Honors Ceremony on Oct. 17. Almost 400 of entrants already have ordered a "Virtual Dipsea Run T-shirt"! 2020run.dipsea-volunteers.org

This is the second time in the past month that the Virtual Dipsea Run has been extended due to wildfires and wildfire smoke in the region.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to all the people affected by these devastating and deadly wildfires throughout the West,” says Merv Regan of the Dipsea Race Committee. “We are concerned about the safety of people participating in this virtual event. We don’t want to encourage people being out inhaling these ashes and other pollutants. We hope the air quality will improve soon and allow people to get out and be able to enjoy the Virtual Dipsea in sunshine and fresh air.”

2020 Dipsea Race Cancelled: The health and safety of our community is of utmost importance to the Dipsea Race Committee. Given the rapid developments and danger involving the COVID-19 coronavirus, we regretfully have chosen to cancel this year’s race.

Although the 110th Dipsea Race on June 14, 2020 is three months away, we reached out to Marin County Health and Human Services Public Health officials and decided it would be best to be proactive in the event of sudden changes that might be required in response to a need for containment.

Our priority is to assure our competitors, our volunteers, their family and friends and all people along the race route and in the community that the Dipsea race, which consists of runners of all ages, would not pose a health risk faced with growing concerns and uncertainties about COVID-19.

This will be the first year since 1945 that the Dipsea Race has not been held. The Dipsea Race was cancelled from 1942-1945 because of World War II.

Though the Dipsea Race Committee has incurred operating expenses planning for this year’s race, all entry checks that have been received for this year’s race will not be deposited. The 110th Dipsea Race will be rescheduled for Sunday, June 13, 2021.

In the meantime, we encourage everyone to remain vigilant and follow these guidelines:
• Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing.
• Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
• Touch your face (eyes, nose, and mouth) as little as possible.

Century-old Dipsea Photos donated by the Coyne Family: Lloyd and Nancy Coyne of El Cerrito admit they have never walked the entire Dipsea trail or ever watched the Dipsea race, but they are forever linked to the history of the Dipsea. That's because Lloyd's father, Raymond, plus his Uncle Lynus and Aunt Miriam all competed in the Dipsea in the 1920s and they have proof. Lost and Found: The Story Behind The 1920 Dipsea Winner's Trophy: As the life of championship trophies go, the one that William O'Callaghan received for winning the 1920 Dipsea Race has had an up-and-down, hide-and-seek adventure symbolic of the race course itself.

For something so rare, this 99-year-old Dipsea trophy has been rarely talked about. It's been lost and found in a bedroom near a garage in the Sunset District in San Francisco then lost and found again in an attic in Sonoma County. Read More Here!

Dipsea Stairs Dedication Ceremony October 20: The Dipsea Race Foundation is hosting a special ceremony on Saturday, October 20, to officially dedicate the renovated second flight of the famed Dipsea Stairs in Mill Valley.

The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. on Marion Avenue at the foot of the second of three flights totaling 680 steps rising from Old Mill Park to Sequoia Valley Road at Edgewood Avenue. Riley the "Dipsea Dog" Honored on Dipsea Steps:: This is the time of year that we traditionally count our blessings and give our thanks. This then is the perfect time to tell you about a caring man and an inspirational dog and how the Dipsea Trail and Dipsea Race connects them. This is not a dog and pony show. Jerry Hauke passes away: The Dipsea Race Committee and the Dipsea Race Foundation mourn the loss of Dipsea Hall of Famer and DRF Emeritus Director Jerry Hauke – a Dipsea legend and the man most responsible for saving the historic trail race from possible extinction.

Jerry died in his sleep on Thursday at his home in Weaverville.

“This is a difficult loss for all of us. Jerry's enthusiasm for life was contagious,” says Merv Regan, longtime chair of the Dipsea Race Committee and Dipsea Race Foundation. “I met him about 36 years ago when I jumped in and volunteered to help him and Bob Knez. When there was a lull, I asked what they were raising the money for. Bob said for the Dipsea Race. I asked `What's the Dipsea Race?’ Jerry was shocked. He said, `You don't know about the Dipsea Race? You have to come to a meeting!’ The rest is history. I will miss my friend. We all will.”

Jerry was a member of the Mill Valley Falls Arts Festival who created the Dipsea Beer Booth in Old Mill Park. In 1963, as a member of the Mill Valley Chamber of Commerce (later known as MV Jaycees), Jerry stepped in to rescue the race after the previous race organizing group withdrew its sponsorship. Jerry also intervened in 1977 when the town of Stinson Beach and County of Marin threatened to end the race if changes were not made.

Hauke led construction of an alternate trail on the race route – dubbed Hauke Hollow – and has a Dipsea Race award – the Red Tail Hawk Award, also named the Jerry Hauke Perpetual Award for Sportsmanship, Leadership, and Dedication– named after him. Hauke Park in Mill Valley also is named in Jerry’s honor.

Our heartfelt condolences and prayers go out to the Hauke Family. A memorial service is pending.
